The exact "start date" of the current Senior Squares Project is unknown. It began as a discussion of the sad shape of the Squares (see "Pre-Project" link below) during planning meetings for the Class of 1970 Thirty Year Reunion, where it was decided that after the Reunion, we (the Class of '70) would do something about the condition of the Squares. As a fund raiser for the project we sold raffle tickets at the Reunion. In addition, it was agreed that a portion of any left over Reunion funds would go to the project.
Our first official meeting, the minutes of which are elsewhere on this Web Site, was March 10th, 2001. We are still meeting regularly, as progress dictates, and will continue to do so until it is agreed there is no further need to meet.
Phase One of the actual project, the removal of the old Senior Squares began on October 29th, 2002, with their break up and removal. October 30th the prep-work was done for the new pad, and on October 31st (Halloween!) the new pad was poured. To protect the fresh concrete from being vandalized, a group of Alumni "Babysat" the pad overnight. The dedicated group of "Baby sitters", who braved the long night and chilly weather, included:
- Brain Dvorak [1973]
- Jim Everett [RHS '71]
- Mark Fenstermaker [1970]
- Bonnie Georgia (Cody) [1970]
- Marjie Holland (Willis) [1970]
- Donna Miller (James) [1960]
- Joyce Modica (James) [1955]
- Kathi Schell (Lilly) [LVHS 1973]
- Cynthia Ann Williams (Stockert) [1974]
- Ruth Wisniewski [1974]
- Richard "Woody" Woodward [1970]
Phase Two, the painting of the squares, began November 1st, 2003. Marjie Holland and others were there off and on through the entire process. What was thought to be a three or four day project turned out to be about four times that......... But the COMPLETED, refurbished, Senior Squares were unveiled to the public, with the help of Senator Richard Bryan, the Senior Squares Project Committee and other local dignitaries, on Monday December 8th, 2003 (see photo links below).
Phase Three, the creation and placement of a "Monument" commemorating the squares, along with a "Time Capsule", containing documentation of the Squares and the Project, is now underway!! Currently we have plans to donate two permanent benches, to be placed where they have a view of the Squares, to the School District, along with commemorative & explanatory plaques. Watch for updates!!
Phase Four, perpetual maintenance, will hopefully follow, forever ....................................
